After 500 Years Still- A Mighty Fortress is Our God

Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)

Sola Fide (faith alone)

Sola Gratia (grace alone)

Solus Christus (Christ alone)

Soli Deo Gloria (to the glory of God alone)

This coming Tuesday will mark 500 years since Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation in Germany by nailing his 95 Theses. He wrote “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” hymn from Psalm 46. This is one of my favorite hymns, and as I go to be with the Lord, they will be singing this great triumphant song! What a glorious day it will be!

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

Psalm 46:1-3 (ESV)

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing
our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

(By Martin Luther)
